A. P. J. Abdul Kalam Former President of India.

 Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam was an Indian aerospace scientist who served as the 11th president of India from 2002 to 2007, By Indian Prime Minister to Mr. Atal Bihari Vajpayeeji. He was born and raised in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu and studied physics and aerospace engineering.

Died: 27 July 2015, Shillong.

Awards and honours: 

 Kalam received 7 honorary doctorates from 40 universities. The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Bhushan in 1981 and the Padma Vibhushan in 1990 for his work with ISRO and DRDO and his role as a scientific advisor to the Government.

After working at ISRO for 19 years, he returned to DRDO and played a significant role in developing missiles like Agni and Prithvi under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP).

He had started his career by designing a small hovercraft at DRDO. After visiting NASA's Langely Research Centre in Hampton, Virginia; Goddard Space Flight Centre in Greenbelt, Maryland and Wallops Flight Facility in 1963-64, he had started working on an expandable rocket project independently in 1965 at DRDO.

The undisputed father of India's missile programme is Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. He has given the Agni and Prithvi ballistic missiles new life, putting China and Pakistan well within India's missile range.


Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman Kailasavadivoo Sivan, was awarded Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Award by Tamil Nadu government. He was awarded in recognition of his stellar work in promotion of science and technology.
