OTT stands for “Over The Top” and refers to any streaming service that delivers content over the internet. The service is delivered “over the top” of another platform, hence the moniker. The cable provider now only provides the internet connection and has no ability to control what you consume.
There's a wide range of OTT platforms, including Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Jio Cinema, Peacock, CuriosityStream, Pluto TV, and so many more.
As on currently There are more than 40 providers of OTT platforms in India, which offer original media content over the internet.
The first dependent Indian OTT platform was BIGFlix, launched by Reliance Entertainment in 2008. In 2010 Digivive launched India's first OTT mobile app called nexGTv, which provides access to both live TV and on–demand content.
Telecom companies like Airtel, Jio, Vi, and BSNL bundle access to the list of OTT players in India with their plans for free. Reliance Jio provides Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+Hotstar VIP, and Jio Cinema access bundled with some of the prepaid and postpaid plans.
Netflix is one of the original OTT streaming services. It started as an online DVD rental shop, but it evolved as live streaming technology began to surface. Today, Netflix is one of the largest on-demand streaming platforms on the internet, featuring over 15,000 titles.
The most popular video streaming service as of September 2019 was YouTube, with 163.75 million monthly active users. Netflix ranked second with 46.55 million MAU, followed by Hulu with just under 26.5 million.

OTT describes the distribution model (video content delivered over the internet), whereas VOD describes the consumption model (video content that can be played back on demand). What's more, OTT deals with consumer-facing media services, while VOD spans all industries and sectors.
OTT platforms have garnered acclaim due to their convenience and minimal requirements- reliable internet connections and a viewing device. However, in India, the popularity of these platforms was not overnight. OTT platforms like Netflix faced a difficult journey to acquire 5 million subscribers.
